Privacy Policy
Effective date: 21 August 2026
TypeMap sells custom typographic map posters. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why, and what happens to it.
We do not use analytics. We do not use advertising or retargeting. We do not set cookies. We do not run a mailing list, and we do not sell or share your information with anyone except the companies listed below that are needed to take your payment and print and post your poster.
Who we are
TypeMap is a product of Motive, a sole proprietorship based in British Columbia, Canada.
For any privacy question or request, contact hello@typemap.co.
What we collect
If you place an order, we collect your name, email address, and shipping address. You provide these during checkout.
If you allow it, we use your device's approximate location once, to choose which place the map shows when you first arrive. Your browser asks your permission first, and you can decline. If you decline, the map opens on a default location and nothing else changes.
Your precise position never leaves your device. Before anything is sent, the coordinates are rounded to about a kilometre — enough to identify the nearest city and no more. Only that rounded, approximate position is sent to MapTiler, our map provider, to turn it into a place name. We do not store it, and it is not used for anything else.
We do not collect payment card details. Payment happens on Stripe's own checkout page. We never see or store your card number.
Why we collect it
We use your name and shipping address to print and deliver your poster. We use your email address to send you an order confirmation and a shipping notification. These are the only emails we send. There is no marketing list to join or leave.
Under the GDPR, our lawful basis is performance of a contract: we need this information to fulfil the order you placed. Location access is based on the consent you give in your browser, which you can withdraw at any time in your browser settings.
What we store in your browser
TypeMap sets no cookies. It stores three things locally on your device:
| What | Where | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Beta access password | Session storage | So the access prompt does not reappear on every page load. Deleted when you close the tab. |
| Dismissed tip flag | Local storage | Remembers that you closed the “pan and zoom” hint. |
| Cached place facts | Local storage | Stores public information about places you have viewed, such as population and area, so we do not re-request it. |
None of these identify you. The cached place facts describe locations, not people. You can clear all of them at any time through your browser's settings.
Who else receives your information
We use a small number of service providers. Each receives only what it needs.
- Stripe processes payment and collects your shipping address on its own checkout page. Stripe holds this information under its own privacy policy.
- Prodigi prints and ships your poster, and receives your name and shipping address in order to do so.
- Resend sends your order confirmation and shipping notification, and receives your email address.
- Cloudflare hosts the site and stores order records and poster files.
- MapTiler provides map tiles, map styles, and place search. Your IP address reaches MapTiler as an unavoidable part of requesting map data. If you allow location access, the rounded, approximate position described above also reaches MapTiler.
- Wikidata provides public facts about places. Your IP address reaches Wikidata when place information is requested.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for advertising.
How long we keep it
- Order records, including your name, email, and shipping address: 12 months from the date of purchase, then deleted automatically.
- Poster files: 30 days, then deleted automatically.
- Payment event records: 30 days.
- Rate limiting: when you begin checkout, we store a one-way cryptographic hash of your IP address for 10 minutes to prevent abuse. Your actual IP address is never stored, and the hash cannot be reversed.
Stripe retains its own record of your payment independently, on its own schedule.
Your rights
You can ask us to give you a copy of the personal information we hold about you, correct it if it is wrong, or delete it. Email hello@typemap.co and we will respond within 30 days.
Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to object to or restrict how we use your information, to receive it in a portable format, or to complain to your local data protection authority.
California residents: you have the right to know what personal information we collect, to request its deletion, and to not be discriminated against for exercising those rights. We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined under the CCPA, so there is nothing to opt out of.
Do Not Track: TypeMap does not track you across websites, so there is no tracking behaviour for a Do Not Track signal to change.
Where your information goes
We are based in Canada and we ship worldwide. Your information may be processed in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union, depending on which of the providers above is handling it. Where information is transferred out of the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, our providers rely on standard contractual clauses or equivalent safeguards.
Children
TypeMap is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us information, email hello@typemap.co and we will delete it.
Changes
If we change this policy, we will update the effective date at the top. Significant changes will be noted on the site.
